Palace gates, night markets, and a fence two hours north

Seoul at the palace gate by nine. The border by lunchtime.

The border

Almost every week in Seoul ends up at the DMZ. The question is which one.

Two hours north of Gwanghwamun the motorway runs out at a checkpoint. Three shapes of border day, what it costs to get on each, and what you actually stand on.

Six kinds of day

Seoul splits into a handful of days out. Pick the one you came for.

A fence two hours north that has not moved since 1953. Five hundred years of palace inside the old walls. A river of market stalls that opens when the offices close, ski slopes ninety minutes east, and the tree avenue on Nami Island everybody photographs in late October.

What Seoul books first

The days out more travellers take than anything else in Seoul.

Inside the old walls

Five Seoul palaces, and a rented hanbok gets you into them free.

Gyeongbokgung changes its guard on the hour and empties by four. Rent a hanbok from a shop on the street outside and the ticket window waves you straight through. Bukchon and Insadong are ten minutes on foot from either gate.

What it costs

What a day out in Seoul actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by what it costs. A hanbok and a palace ticket come in under lunch, and the border run sits near the top of the cheap band.

$50–150

The long days east: Nami and Morning Calm, Mt Seorak, ski shuttles, cooking classes with a market attached.

$150 and up

A car and a guide to yourself, no-shopping border days, and the multi-day runs south to Gyeongju and Busan.

Only in Seoul

Three days out you cannot book anywhere else.

Palaces and night markets run the length of Asia. A guided walk to a line the war never formally closed, a disused railway you pedal through lit tunnels, and a drama rehearsed in front of you do not.

Two hours north

The DMZ

The Korean War stopped in 1953 with an armistice and no peace treaty, so the four-kilometre strip across the peninsula is still the line. Tours reach the Third Tunnel, dug from the north and found in 1978, and Dora Observatory, whose binoculars point at a village with a 160-metre flagpole. Your passport is checked at the bridge, the zone shuts at short notice, and the dress code has turned people back at the gate.

The old Gyeongchun line

The Rail Bike

When the line to Chuncheon was rerouted, the old track through the Bukhangang valley was left in the ground and fitted with four-seat pedal carts. You free-wheel down it through tunnels lit like a fairground, cross the river on the original bridge, and a converted train hauls you back up. Weekend slots go first and the last carts leave well before dark.

Behind the screen

K-Drama and K-Pop

The industry that exports the shows also sells tickets to its own machinery: a rehearsal watched from the gallery at an MBC studio, a dance class taught by a working choreographer, a day at a filming location up in the mountains. Most of it runs on production schedules, so what is bookable depends on what is shooting that week.

Book before you fly

Four Seoul bookings that will not wait until you land.

Most of this city can be arranged over breakfast. These four answer to military clearance, a ski season, three weeks of leaf colour and a rental counter with a queue round it.

  1. 01Best DMZ Tour Korea from Seoul (Red Suspension Bridge Optional)Your passport number is filed with the military days ahead, and the whole zone closes at no notice when they say so.
  2. 02Eobi Ice Valley / Elysian Ski Resort / Nami IslandThe slopes run December to early March. Outside that window the shuttles east simply do not go.
  3. 03Mt. Seorak+Nami Island+Garden of Morning Calm Day Trip from SeoulThe tree avenues turn for about three weeks in late October, and every seat east is taken well before they do.
  4. 04Hanbok Rental with Gyeongbokgung Palace EntryThe rental shops beside Gyeongbokgung run out on weekends and holidays, when half of Seoul has had the same idea.
January in Seoul

Seoul reaches minus fifteen, and the city has already solved it.

From December the wind comes off the plain and outdoor sightseeing stops being enjoyable by about two in the afternoon. There are two answers. Lean into it on a slope ninety minutes east, or book the day indoors: a kitchen, a workshop, a covered market, a warm studio.
